Get ready for our annual Spring Garden Competition

Autumn is a great time for green thumbed residents and organisations in Parramatta to start preparing for the annual Spring Garden Competition.

If you are proud of the hard work you put into your garden, we'd love you to enter.

With 8 judging categories, there’s a category for every garden no matter how big or small. Categories include:


Desirable Characteristics


Front Garden

Specifically for front gardens


Balcony or Small Space Garden

Category for the small garden spaces which make a difference


Floral or Ornamental Garden

Traditional ornamental residential garden. This is a more general category


Native Garden

Garden which uses primarily native plants


Edible Garden

Garden which demonstrates use of sustainable principles and/or systems primarily to grow food


Community Garden

Open to any group garden, could be local community or organisation, or communal garden


School Garden

Open to any school in the Parramatta LGA with a focus on Primary or High School Gardening Programs


Non-Residential Garden

For a professionally maintained garden, open to hospitals, corporate/commercial, and educational institutions

Competition Rules

  1. The competition is open to any person who owns or occupies residential, commercial, industrial or school premises in the City of Parramatta Local Government Area.

  2. Competitors may enter a garden in more than one category, however, a garden can only receive one prize.

  3. Council reserves the right to judge a garden in a different category to the one nominated where appropriate.

  4. Entrants will be notified of the date and time the judging panel will visit their garden (in September 2017).

  5. Prizes will be awarded for overall design and appearance once all eligible entries have been evaluated

  6. The winners will be drawn, and an awards ceremony will be held, at the Wisteria Fete, Cumberland Hospital on Saturday 23 September 2017, with details to be forwarded to entrants by phone or email. The judge’s decision is final. There are no appeals.

  7. Prize cheques will be posted to the winners and winners published on the COP website.

  8. Total prize pool = $3,500 (refer to table above for details).
