Ngana Birrung on Tour at 4E Sydney Festival

Events - Body Content

The City of Parramatta's First Nations hip hop festival "Ngana Birrung” which means Black Star in local Dharug language debuted at Parramatta Nights in April with stellar performances from Briggs, JK47 and Miiesha. A multi council event “Ngana Birrung” now joins the 4ESydney Festival event in Blacktown featuring Western Sydney’s own BARKAA and DOBBY.

The performances take place at The Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre on Saturday 25 June 12pm - 10pm with free entry. Register now.

Headlining the night is BARKAA a Malyangapa, Barkindji woman from Western New South Wales, now living in South West Sydney on Gandangara land. Music to BARKAA has been part of her journey to express herself, the truth and issues impacting First Nations people. Since her 2020 debut single, “For My Tittas”, BARKAA has swiftly climbed to the top as one of the most respected voices in (so-called) Australian hip-hop. From numerous live performances (including the Sydney Opera House) to appearances on Rage, being awarded 2020 PUMA Rookie Of The Year Award for Acclaim Magazine, featured in GQ, named one of the top rappers in the country by triple j and Red Bull respectively, and most recently announced as part of The #YouTubeBlack Voices Class of 2022, appearing on billboards across Times Square and Los Angeles, BARKAA’s star power is fast rising.

Also on the cards is DOBBY is a rapper, drummer, speaker and workshop facilitator. Aged 26, he proudly identifies as a Filipino and Aboriginal musician, whose family is from Brewarrina on Ngemba land, and is a member of the Murrawarri Republic in Weilmoringle, NSW. DOBBY is a skilled music composer, and the 2017 recipient for the bi-annual Peter Sculthorpe Fellowship. DOBBY released his self-titled ‘DOBBY’ EP in September 2018, which he wrote and produced. The EP tour (2018/19) took DOBBY worldwide, with shows including BIGSOUND, Sydney Opera House, Bluesfest/ Boomerang Festival, Dancerites, OzAsia Festival (ADL), The Great Escape (UK) New Skool Rules (NL), Indigenous Music Sumit (NOLA), Aussie BBQ (Brighton, London, Berlin) and Reeperbahn Festival (GER).
