Parramatta Town Hall

History

Situated in the heart of Parramatta City, this majestic two storey, Victorian Free Classical style, civic building is Parramatta's historic Town Hall. Governor Phillip originally designated the site as a market area in his grand plans for Parramatta, and the market fair was held here in 1813. Town Hall was also the site of Governor Macquarie's annual feast for Aborigines, which continued tradition into 1830.

Designed by George Allen Mansfield and built by Hart and Lavors in 1881, the Town Hall features the City of Parramatta Coat of Arms, which features Aboriginal people spearing eels from the river, with the inscription 'Town Hall, CJ Byrnes, Mayor, 1880'.

Over the years, various additions have been made to accommodate the City of Parramatta, citizens and visitors, but the original building still serves as Parramatta's uniquely beautiful Town Hall.
