Sports facilities, parks, playgrounds and other outdoor spaces across the City of Parramatta are set for multimillion-dollar upgrades following a funding boost from the NSW Government.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Donna Davis today welcomed the announcement that six Council projects worth more than $15 million will be funded through the WestInvest Community Project Grants Program.
Cr Davis said the projects that Council put forward reflected feedback from the community, who have been clear about the need for better infrastructure and more open and green spaces to support our rapid population growth.
“It’s great to receive the funding and even greater that Council has identified and initiated so many strong and worthy projects that support our growing City – from sports and recreation facilities in Eastwood and Winston Hills, to a skate park and BMX track at Toongabbie, play and fitness areas in Carlingford and Dundas, and an off-leash dog park in Epping,” Cr Davis said.
“Our community is at the heart of everything we do. These projects reflect what they’ve been telling us they want to see across our city. I look forward to further funding announcements for many other important projects we have proposed.”
Cr Davis said Council was focused on providing as much quality green and open spaces for the community as possible, both now and into the future.
“The City of Parramatta is experiencing rapid population growth and doing more than its share of heavy lifting in delivering housing, quality jobs and public infrastructure,” Cr Davis said.
“Every corner of our local government area is impacted by our transformation into a global city, so significant funding is needed to support this growth so that the benefits are felt by all.
“Building the right community infrastructure in the right places is critical to the success of our City and Greater Sydney as a whole. We need more open space and improved access to quality sport, recreation and other community facilities.
“Council doesn’t have the capacity to fund the spaces and places we need to support our growing city. It requires funding and collaboration from all levels of government.”
Projects that have been awarded funding include:
- Improvements to Somerville Park in Eastwood, including the delivery of an accessible playground, multi-purpose sports court space, outdoor fitness equipment, and shaded areas.
- Upgraded amenities building at Max Ruddock Reserve in Winston Hills to support the growth of local sports clubs
- Multi-generational facilities at Sue Savage Reserve in Toongabbie, including accessible toilets, skate park, fitness stations, car park, and BMX pump track
- Youth play facilities at parks in Dundas to support young people in the area
- Major improvements to Kilpack Park in Carlingford with new play and fitness equipment
- An off-leash dog area in West Epping Park
City of Parramatta Council has also applied for funding for several other projects as part of the competitive round of the WestInvest Community Project Grants Program.
