Notification of Site Works - Charles Street Square at Parramatta Quay

Re: Charles Street Square site investigations - high voltage electrical cabling

Monday 18 May to Friday 22 May 2020

City of Parramatta Council is preparing concept designs to transform Charles Street Square at Parramatta Quay. This exciting project is one of a number of planned foreshore improvements that will strengthen the connection between our city and the Parramatta River.

To support this work, investigations to map the location of an underground high voltage electrical cable will be undertaken by specialist contractors.

When will the work take place?

Work will start Monday 18 May, and take place between 7.00am and 5.00pm each day. Subject to weather and site conditions, work is expected to be completed by close of business Friday 22 May.

What is a high voltage cable investigation?

This work will involve a crew of specialist contractors ‘pot-holing’ on the western side of Charles Street Square in a series of locations from near the Phillip Street footpath to the foreshore path near the weir. Following the mapped route of an Endeavour Energy underground cable, the crew will assess the exact depth and position of the cable and a surveyor will mark the pavement with information required to safely complete the investigation.  Following this work, marked sections of the pavement will be removed allowing for soil to be excavated to expose the cable.

Excavations and pedestrian safety exclusion zones

Excavation will take place using a combination of hand augering and non-destructive, hydro-vacuuming. Soil will be removed from the site in accordance with NSW Environment Protection Authority regulations and SafeWork NSW protocols.

Once cables have been fully surveyed and photographed, the pot-holes will be reinstated, filled with clean compacted sand to ensure the pavement is safe for use. As a temporary measure, the pavement will be restored with asphalt until work on the Charles Street Square upgrade begins in 2021.

An exclusion zone will be created around the works for safety.  Staff will direct pedestrians around the site as required.

Please note, pedestrian access to the Parramatta Ferry Wharf and access to 90 Phillip Street will be maintained.
