Pedestrian access to Darcy Street maintained via covered walkway

Pedestrians and commuters will still be able to use Darcy Street to navigate their way around the CBD as the $2 billion Parramatta Square starts to take shape.

City of Parramatta Council, Walker Corporation, Sydney Trains and Transport NSW have taken a collaborative approach to work through the best options to prioritise the pedestrian experience in the CBD whilst allowing this important city-changing development to move forward as we continue Building Australia’s Next Great City.

Developer Walker Corporation will install new hoarding in the coming week that will allow Darcy Street to remain open to pedestrians during the early phases of excavation and construction.

Pedestrian access will be through an enclosed walkway to protect the public during excavation and construction. This enclosed walkway means access from Parramatta train station to Darcy Street will be retained.

It’s important to note that your route around the Parramatta CBD will not change although it will look slightly different and you'll notice more work happening on the site as Walker Corporation progresses with excavation work.

The enclosed walkway will be well-lit, and a security patrol will also monitor the area between 6:30pm and 6:30am.

It is envisaged Darcy Street will need to close to pedestrians in future to allow for the completion of Parramatta Square.

City of Parramatta Council will keep you updated on further changes to Darcy Street.

As a reminder, these services were relocated when Darcy Street closed to traffic in February.

  • Route 900 – the free Parramatta loop shuttle bus – now picks up and drops off at 91 Macquarie Street, just before Centenary Square.
  • Rail replacement buses and private shuttle buses, such as those operated by Wet’n’Wild, use a new bus area on Smith Street near the forecourt area between Sydney Water and Western Sydney University’s new vertical campus
  • Western Sydney University’s shuttle bus stop is located at 169 Macquarie Street outside the campus
  • Alternative drop-off/pick-up zone for commuters are close by at Fitzwilliam Street, outside the railway station entrance and on Valentine Avenue near Wentworth Street.
  • To grab a taxi, use the existing ranks on Fitzwilliam Street and Valentine Avenue.
