Second Hand Isn't Second Best

There's many things we can do to help the environment, such as recycling our unwanted items.

Repair it

City of Parramatta, in partnership with the Bower Parramatta, offers residents free repair assistance on the last Saturday of each month at their local branch (10 Hunter Street, Parramatta). Qualified technicians will be available between 10am and 12pm to help you restore your worn out items, such as lamps, fans and side tables.

The Bower also offer many workshops for those interested in learning how to repair some of your worn out household items. To check out the current available workshops, go to The Bower website.

Re-home it

If you're looking to throw out any unwanted household items that are still on good condition, please consider donating them to many of our local not-for-profit organisations.

Check out the Reuse Tool from the Bower where they will find alternative organisations to re-home their items.

The Bower also provide assistance in re-homing certain types of pre-loved items via a truck collection service. To see if your items are accepted for rehoming or to book for a collection, visit The Bower website.

Choose used

Buying second hand goods is not only cheaper, but benefits the environment and your local community.  Whether fashion, furniture, electronics or homewares, new things use up valuable resources to create, which are lost when they are disposed of. Buying second hand extends the life of products, preventing them from ending up in landfill when they could be used.

Second hand shopping is also a great way to find unique items, often much better made than their present day equivalents. Why not check out a garage sale, indulge in some online browsing (try Gumtree, eBay or Freecycle) or one of the great second hand stores in City of Parramatta?

For more information, please contact enviroed@cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au or go to The Bower Reuse and Repair Centre website.
