Respecting our Custodians

Children playing in splash play area at Parramatta Aquatic Centre

Parramatta Aquatic Centre (PAC) is located on the land of the Dharug people, the Traditional Owners of this area. In recognition of their enduring connection to Country and ongoing sovereignty, ten spaces within the facility feature dual names in both English and Dharug.

The Dharug names were selected in consultation with Dharug language knowledge holders and confirmed through a process of community engagement.

Where possible, wayfinding signage throughout the centre includes both the English and Dharug names. The dual naming approach connects each space to its purpose or surrounding environment while creating opportunities for visitors to learn and engage with the Dharug language.

Our Dual Naming Approach

Dual naming is a recognised approach that allows First Nations languages and place names to sit alongside commonly used English names. The inclusion of dual naming at PAC was developed in consultation with a wayfinding specialist to ensure the names could be effectively incorporated into signage and visitor information.

Key principles of the dual naming approach include:

  • English names remain the primary reference point for signage and wayfinding.
  • Dharug names are incorporated into signage and nameplates wherever possible.
  • English translations of Dharug names are displayed on nameplates and interpretive panels to support learning and understanding.

In total, ten spaces within the facility have been given dual names. These names complement those previously endorsed by Council on 11 July 2022, including the Kevin Hession Stand and the Memorial Pool (50m Pool).
