Sofya Gollan is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice incorporates video, photography and narrative storytelling to present alternative visions of the world. As a Deaf person her frame on the world is highly visual, with sound, speech and music an intermittent colouring-in of her daily life. Her work is unique and provocative, offering audiences a pathway to alternative viewpoints on how the world is experienced. Bilingual in both English and Auslan, she uses both language modalities in her work via speech, sign and animated text, providing insight to a staggered access to language that mimic how Deaf people gather information.

Sofya’s art practice is informed by her career as an award-winning filmmaker and a graduate from both NIDA and AFTRS. Her career spans several disciplines, as an actor she is best known for being on Play School for over 30 years, normalising Disability onscreen well before it was recognised as essential representation. She is also a playwright, filmmaker, writer, director and developer. Sofya's work is informed by the experience of the outsider, seeking to illuminate these characters in contemporary storytelling. Her contributions to media have raised awareness and advocated for the inclusion and promotion of Deaf artists.
