Movers & Makers

Movers & Makers

This year, Movers & Makers is guest-curated by Paschal Daantos Berry in consultation with Baramadagal Family Group: The Architecture of Us explores the visible and invisible structures that sustain artistic practice.

It asks what forms of support are needed to nurture artists, communities and cultural futures, and how relationships, cultural knowledge, shared histories and acts of reciprocity create the foundations upon which creative practice is built.

The program will also include a youth-led component curated by Yeshal Mansoor.

Registration provides entry to Movers & Makers, however individual talks, workshops and programs have limited capacity, so we recommend arriving early for sessions you don’t want to miss.

Program Schedule:

Family of Thought

9.30am

Welcome to Country with Linda Sainsbury

9.45am

Smoking ceremony with Heidi Duncan

10am-11am

Panel: How do we begin?

Facilitated by Jazz Money, this panel brings together Billy Bain, Inés Reid, Paschal and Heidi for a shared conversation about connection, culture, practice and community. Together, they reflect on the people, places and experiences that shape how we think, make and relate to one another.

11am-12.30pm

Workshop: Generational sharing

Generational Sharing invites participants to spend time outdoors together, gathering natural materials, connecting with Country and sharing conversation. Led by Jasmine Craciun, whose multidisciplinary practice explores identity, place, memory and cultural preservation, participants will return to PAS to collectively create watercolour “pass-around” artworks, with each person contributing to and building upon one another’s work through shared making and exchange

12.30pm-1pm

Workshop: Body Weather with Victoria Hunt

Join Victoria Hunt for a body centred collective experience that expands on the thematics of The Architecture of Us. Through Body Weather, a movement practice attuned to the body and its environment, Hunt invites participants to notice how people, places and knowledge shape us. Drawing on Māori whakapapa and Indigenous ways of knowing, the session opens space to sense connection, exchange and shared responsibility. No dance experience is needed; curiosity and a willingness to listen through the body are enough.

What do we nourish?

1pm-2pm

Hosted by Daniel, Perky and Marian Abboud

What does it mean to nourish one another? Daniel, Perky and Marian invite you into the kitchen as they prepare lunch for the day. Drop in anytime between 10am-5pm to lend a hand or simply join the conversation as the kitchen becomes a space for exchange, connection and spending time together.

Once the cooking is done, everyone will come together on the ground floor to be served lunch and share the meal.

Location: Ground Floor, Kitchen

Genealogy of Practice

3pm-4pm

Performance Lecture: Brian Fuata

In this improvised performance lecture, Brian Fuata traces the genealogy of his practice through family, ancestry and artistic kinship, both biological and non-biological. Moving through the people, practices and relationships that have shaped him, he reflects on what we inherit, what we leave behind, and what we carry into the present and future. Attuned to the conditions of the gathering, Fuata lets memory, gesture and encounter shape the performance, inviting us to consider how connections continually remake who we are.

11am-6pm

Film Screening: Bhenji Ra, 'Learning to Dance in Flames', 2026

Currently screening as a 31-channel video in the Busan Biennale, Learning to Dance in Flames is Bhenji Ra’s nod to the 1983 feminist agit-prop, Born in Flames by Lizzie Borden. A rallying cry of resistance, a living archive and a tonic for our times, Movers and Makers presents a 20-minute section of the work featuring a ceremonial performance by Filipina artist Bunny Cadag.

11am-6pm

Workshop: Costume making

Join Leeroy New Studio artists – Arvie Santos and Sean Padie – in Studio 4 in creating a large scale costume for a major new work. Drop in throughout the day to experiment with recycled plastics and found materials. Make alongside others and create together.

At 2pm, join Fei Gao for an in conversation with Arvie and Sean, exploring points of connection and relationship between their practices, offering another way into the ideas behind the making taking place in the studio.

Future Makers

4pm-5pm

Panel: Who gets to be an Artist?

Curated by youth advocate Yeshal Mansoor, Who Gets To Be An Artist? is youth-led conversation about belonging and the barriers that shape participation in the arts. Join moderator Hadiya Fatima and panellists Liv Zdrilic, Emmanuel Sante and Mei Lin Myers as they discuss their lived experiences of claiming space as artists, who supports them as young people and what creative practice looks like for diverse identities and experiences. The audience is invited to reflect on how people and communities respond to young artists and what more the sector could do to support their voices.

5pm-6pm

Workshop: Coffee Art-Making with Emmanuel Asante

Join young artist Emmanuel Sante for a hands-on art workshop using coffee. Create an artwork inspired by an animal you admire, relate to or are inspired by, then contribute to a collective artwork exploring inter-generational solidarity, connection and the strength of diverse communities.
