WPCCL 2025 Term 3 Drawing and Painting (Ages 18+)

Learn the fundamental skills of drawing and mark-making each week and have fun with other aspiring Artists! This class will take you through the various techniques of drawing and painting from line, tone, shading, to using different materials and papers.

Week 1 – Under-painting and building a tonal study

• Still life of fruit, vases and drapery
• Selecting the right colour for underpainting
• Sketching basic shapes in pencil
• Using tone to block out composition and tone to build three-dimensional form

Week 2 – Colour theory and building a palette

• Impressionist landscape - water study
• Mixing and laying out a palette
• Hue / tone / opacity
• Building energy with brush strokes, stroke direction and colour variability
• Considering the effect of warm and cool tones on composition
• Discuss options for different surfaces, pros and cons and where to get them

Week 3 – Brushes, brush strokes, mixed media and energy

• Fauvist/Expressionist figure or landscape
• Experiment with different styles of brushes and brush strokes – monotone, media, to get various types of lines
• Experiment working on the floor and an easel
• Paint two different works, one still and calm, the other using energy and the whole body - colour

Week 4 – Composition, then Self-directed project

• Discussion in the first hour
• Composition leads the eye around a painting and provides energy
• Composition techniques – Rule of thirds / Golden mean / circular / angled / pyramid/ etc,
• Discuss the role of negative space, colour (warm/cool), balance and line in composition
• Focal points, movement/rhythm, pause and release in composition
• Light / shadow / contrast - how tone builds composition

Weeks 5-8 – Self-directed project

• Colour mixing to match selected images
• Understanding colour – hue, tone, complementary and contrasting colours, etc
• Blending colours, gradients, smooth transitions, soft edges, etc
• How shadows work, reflections and developing three-dimensional forms
• Fixing mistakes
• Introducing other media – colour pencil, watercolour, digital painting, etc

All materials will be provided.

When: Wednesdays 6 August - 24 September 2025 (8 weeks), 6pm - 8pm (2 hours)
