Heritage Conservation

The City of Parramatta is one of the most historically significant places in Australia.

For over 60,000 years, the area comprising present day Parramatta has been occupied by the Burramattagal people, a clan of the Dharug, who first settled along the upper reaches of the Parramatta River.

In 1788, the first Europeans arrived in Rose Hill(PDF, 685KB) (now known as Parramatta). Governor Arthur Philip established Parramatta as a farming settlement to ensure the colony's survival.

Given this, the City of Parramatta is rich with heritage items and areas, recognised at the Local, State, National and World level.
