The Parramatta to Sydney Foreshore Link

When complete, the Parramatta to Sydney Foreshore Link will provide Sydney’s longest continuous route for people to walk and ride bikes. More than 90km of continuous pathway will link the Parramatta River foreshore to Parramatta Park and the Sydney Opera House/Royal Botanic Gardens.

The Parramatta to Sydney Foreshore Link program brings together the NSW Government and Councils to work collaboratively to improve access to the foreshore and deliver new and upgraded pedestrian and cyclist connections for locals and visitors of all ages and abilities to enjoy our beautiful Parramatta River and Sydney Harbour.

Parramatta Links

The Parramatta to Sydney Foreshore Link has been divided into individual segments to help with planning, design and construction.

As the program progresses, designs will be prepared for each section including all relevant planning and environmental assessments. City of Parramatta will consult with our community when the different segments are being planned. (Some new links are subject to funding).

The 91km continuous route between Dharug and Gadi Country, from Parramatta Park to the Sydney Opera House/Royal Botanic Gardens, will connect vibrant local centres allowing locals and visitors to spend time together for recreation and adventure, walking or cycling safely along our Parramatta River foreshore to Sydney Harbour circuits.

The Parramatta to Sydney Foreshore Link is proudly funded by the NSW Government.

George Street East Paths, CBD Parramatta

To improve access to the CBD from the east along the river, Council will deliver:

  • a combination of shared paths and exclusive pedestrian and cyclist paths through Queens Wharf Reserve between the Alfred Street Bridge and Gasworks Bridge, Parramatta
  • a raised pedestrian and cyclist crossing over River Road West east of Alfred Street
  • a contra-flow bike lane on the northern side of Noller Parade, Parramatta.

Bennelong Parkway Bridge and Link, Wentworth Point

At Bennelong Parkway, City of Parramatta providing a missing key link which will complete the Homebush Bay Circuit by building a pedestrian and cyclist bridge on the northern side of Bennelong Parkway. 

The proposed bridge will provide a continuous, off-road foreshore access between Wentworth Point, Rhodes and Sydney Olympic Park. As part of the project Council will create separated walking and cycling along the entire eastern edge of the bridge.

New paths will connect the bridge west to the new traffic lights at Hill Road, and on the east connect to the Badu Mangroves, as well as a raised crossing of Bennelong Parkway to Wentworth Common.

Brodie Street, Rydalmere

Completed in 2024, the raised combined pedestrian and cyclist crossing on Brodie Street provides pedestrians and cyclists travelling through Rydalmere with a safer connection to Parramatta. 

The new crossing removes the last uncontrolled street crossing along the off-road route connecting Parramatta Park and Melrose Park.

The Brodie Street project also allows riders to safely travel to the Parramatta CBD via the Parramatta River foreshore paths.

City of Parramatta projects

City of Parramatta is working on a number of other projects that will contribute to accessible and safe walking and cycling within our community along the Parramatta River. These are  funded outside of the Parramatta to Sydney Foreshore Link program.

Western River Precinct Connections, Parramatta CBD

Set to be completed by 2027, this $28+ million project is centred around the creation of new pedestrian and cycling paths to provide a continuous, accessible foreshore route and improve connections between the Parramatta River foreshore and adjacent streets.

Focused on the river segment between Marsden Street and O'Connell Street, the Western River Precinct Connections will provide the community with more opportunities to engage with, appreciate, and enjoy the Parramatta River. 

A dedicated bridge for pedestrians and cyclists will connect the northern and southern riverbanks near Marsden Street. The bridge will also provide a key north-south active transport connection across our city centre. 

A new boardwalk along the southern foreshore, with connections under existing bridges, will establish continuous foreshore access for walking and cycling along the river’s edge, something currently only possible on the northern side.  

Eastern Parramatta River, Parramatta CBD, Rydalmere and Ermington

The Eastern Parramatta River project brings together a program of pedestrian and cyclist path improvements along the Parramatta River foreshore.

Paths east of the CBD will be upgraded providing amenity and safety improvements allowing more of the community to comfortably use these boardwalks and paths. A number of these planned works were requested by our community.

Designed to capitalise on the popularity of the Parramatta Valley Cycleway along the Parramatta River foreshore, this exciting project sees a total of 2.8km of improved paths alongside the river, providing the community with more opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty of the Parramatta River.

The Eastern Parramatta River project will improvements in five key locations:

  1. Rangihou Reserve, Parramatta
  2. Baludarri Wetlands, Parramatta
  3. Reid Park, Rydalmere
  4. Royal Shores, Ermington
  5. George Kendall Riverside Park, Ermington

Riverside Theatres

The re-imagined Riverside Theatres is expected to have improved pedestrian and cyclist access along the Parramatta River.

Alfred Street Bridge

Completed in 2023, Alfred Street Bridge is a spectacular new addition to City of Parramatta’s skyline. 

The 4.5 meters wide and almost 200m long bridge spans across the Parramatta River between James Ruse Drive and the Gasworks Bridge and is part of the City of Parramatta’s planned network of improvements designed to make Parramatta easier to navigate for pedestrians and bike riders.

Co-funded by City of Parramatta and the NSW Government, the $19m Alfred Street Bridge connects neighbourhoods on either side of the Parramatta River and Parramatta River foreshore paths.
