Alfred Street Bridge
The Alfred Street Bridge is a spectacular engineering marvel and a vital new Parramatta River crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.
Co-funded by Council and the NSW Government, the $19m bridge was officially opened by Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre Esber and NSW Minister for Transport Jo Haylen on 31 October 2023.
The bridge provides the City's growing population with a convenient, safe and scenic connection over the Parramatta River. It is also a key element within a planned network of improvements designed to make the City easier to navigate and access.
A bridge like no other
The Alfred Street Bridge has been described as Australia’s first true diagonal arch bridge.
A diagonal arch bridge is one where the arch is rotated, or skewed, so that it’s not running parallel to the deck of the bridge.
The Alfred Street Bridge arch achieves this by curving from the east at the Alfred Street entry, to the west at Baludarri Drive on the north.
This provides a unique visual experience for pedestrians and cyclists using the bridge, to cross over the river and people travelling under the bridge on board a ferry.
Connecting communities
The 4.5m wide and almost 200m long bridge provides a new Parramatta River crossing between the James Ruse Drive and the Macarthur Street bridges.
The Alfred Street Bridge:
- Connects growing neighbourhoods on either side of the Parramatta River
- Provides more convenient access to services, schools and recreational opportunities, including a link to more than 20km of off-road paths along the Parramatta River; and
- Delivers direct access to the Parramatta Light Rail Stage 1 stop on the southern side of the river.
It is part of the City of Parramatta’s vision for the Central River City which includes a revitalised river and connected, sustainable, innovative communities.
The project was proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with the City of Parramatta.
Fast Facts
- The Alfred Street Bridge including approach ramps is 200m long and 4.5m wide.
- Around 280 tonnes of Australian BlueScope steel was used to fabricate the deck and arch in Western Sydney by S&L Steel.
- More than 780 cubic metres of concrete was used in the construction of the bridge.
- The bridge deck and arch were fabricated in Western Sydney and installed on site.
- The steel cables that support the deck from the arch were manufactured in Italy, and a specialist team flew in to oversee the installation.
