Veterans

What is a Veteran?

In November 2017, the Commonwealth and all state and territory Veterans’ Affairs Ministers reached consensus regarding a common definition of the term ‘veteran’. It was agreed to be defined broadly as ‘a person who is serving or has served in the Australian Defence Force’, or a reservist who has rendered Continuous Fulltime Service.

2017 legislation indicated that serving and non-serving members who did full-time service and reservist who has rendered continuous full-time service are ‘by law’ veterans.

How many veterans are there?

  • 496,276 in Australia
  • 127,657 in NSW
  • 1,996 in Parramatta LGA

What is Council doing for veterans?

Council has recently signed The Veterans' Employment Commitment identifying us as a Veteran Friendly Employer. This is a commitment from us that we value the skills and experience of ex-ADF members and will consider veterans for employment opportunities.

The VEC requires us, here at City of Parramatta Council, to:

  • Recognise the skills and values that veterans can bring to City of Parramatta Council.
  • Support the employment of veterans, ensuring equal opportunity in gaining employment with Council.
  • Aim to provide career opportunities in Council to veterans.
  • Actively seek to understand how veterans’ skills and experience can translate into civilian skills and contribute to Council.
  • Provide suitable training, mentoring and coaching to veterans to assist their integration into Council.
  • Ensure our People and Culture policies equitably support the recruitment and retention of all employees, including veterans

City of Parramatta Veterans Employee Resource Group (Veterans ERG)

Here at City of Parramatta, we have established a Veterans Employee Resource Group (ERG).

The Veterans ERG is an employer-recognised and employee-led group who share a common interest and belief that an inclusive organisation with diverse employee representation leads to better outcomes for both the organisation and the community members we serve. Membership in the Veterans ERG is open to all employees and is voluntary.

The purpose of our Veteran’s ERG is to bring together staff who are Veterans, ex-service people and current or former ADF members, from across Council, to discuss initiatives and important issues pertaining to Veterans and to assist in creating an internal network, connecting staff from a variety of Veteran backgrounds.

The Veterans ERG membership is made up of staff from both Veteran and non-Veteran backgrounds, who work together, and with employees across Council, to explore ways in which we can truly make City of Parramatta an employer of choice for Veterans.
