Greening Parramatta

A lush field of young trees in protective tubes stretches into the distance under a bright blue sky with fluffy clouds, bordered by dense green forest.

Trees play an important role in the greening of our City – helping create a cooler, cleaner, and healthier environment for everyone.

What’s next for Greening Parramatta trees?

The special maintenance period for our Greening Parramatta trees is coming to an end. To support their continued growth, we’re removing stakes, giving them a light trim, and adding mulch where needed.

From here, these trees will be cared for as part of Council’s general maintenance program.

Thank you to our Tree Champions and all residents who helped nurture these young trees during their first year. Your support has made a real difference. Please continue to keep an eye on them and help them thrive.

If you notice a tree that needs a little extra care, you can lodge a service request via the Services Portal at the top right of Council’s website (under ‘Trees on Council Land’), or call our Customer Contact Centre on 1300 617 058.

Project highlights

2022 | Planting for a cooler, greener future

In 2022, the City of Parramatta launched a major tree planting initiative, supported by a $500,000 grant from the NSW Government, matched by Council. This was part of the Greening Our City program, a NSW Government initiative aiming to plant one million trees across Greater Sydney by the end of the year.

More than 2,600 trees were planted across our local area, with each location carefully chosen based on its vulnerability to urban heat. A wide variety of advanced trees – both native and exotic – were selected to suit their surroundings and thrive in our environment.

These trees are already cooling our city, supporting local wildlife, and making our streets and parks greener and more welcoming.

2022/23 | Greening the heart of the City

As part of a separate $450,000 grant, Council planted semi-mature statement trees in Marsden and O’Connell Streets in the Parramatta CBD. Each tree stood over 3 metres tall and was planted as part of planned street upgrades to bring more greenery into the city centre.

The project team carefully considered factors such as power lines, underground services, and nearby trees to ensure the new plantings would thrive and complement the urban landscape.

This CBD planting was also proudly funded through the Greening Our City program, in partnership with Local Government NSW.

2023 | A year of growth and community

One year on, the results have been heartening. Of the 2,600+ trees planted, more than 2,330 are thriving - a testament to the care and commitment of our community.

A special thank you goes to our 90+ Tree Champions, who volunteered their time to monitor and nurture these young trees during their first year. Their efforts helped us achieve our best tree survival rate to date, despite challenges like vandalism and tree removal.

2023/24 | Greening the Great West Walk

The Great West Walk is a 65km trail stretching from Parramatta to the foot of the Blue Mountains. In 2021, Council planted over 7,600 trees along Toongabbie Creek as part of this important greening initiative, proudly funded by the NSW Government.

In July 2022, Council secured an additional $126,000 from the Department of Planning and Environment to support Stage 2 of the project.

Over the following 12 months, works included weed clearing, track upgrades, and the planting of more than 2,800 new trees along the Toongabbie Creek corridor.

What types of trees were planted?

Our arborists carefully selected tree species suited to each location, considering local conditions such as power lines, access needs, and existing street trees. A mix of native and exotic, evergreen and deciduous trees were chosen to provide long-term benefits and become a valued part of the community.

Where did planting take place?

Using a range of studies, the project team identified areas most vulnerable to urban heat - places where increased tree canopy would make the biggest difference.

Planting took place in streets and parks across the Local Government Area, including suburbs such as Constitution Hill, Epping, Ermington, Granville, North Rocks, Parramatta, Silverwater, Toongabbie and Winston Hills.
