Parramatta Farmer’s Markets is going plastic free!

From 31 January, stallholders and food vendors will begin phasing out single-use plastic packaging and utensils and replacing them with reusable or compostable alternatives.

New green-lidded bins will be placed at the markets for customers to dispose of their compostable products, leftover food and other organic waste into. The waste from green-lidded bins will be taken to a local food waste-to-energy facility in Camellia and transformed into sustainable products such as green energy and nutrient-rich fertiliser.

To succeed we need your help to ensure only organic waste is disposed of in the green lidded bins, so keep your eye out when you’re at the Farmers Market and ensure you are disposing of correctly.

Approximately 80 percent of the waste currently generated at the markets is compostable but is disposed of in general waste bins and taken to landfill. Once in landfill, it breaks down and emits potent greenhouse gases.

As Australian landfills reach capacity and the impact of plastic devastates our environment, the demand for better waste practices grows. In November last year, students from the What’s Up West Youth Conference made it clear that environmental sustainability was their top priority and voted for the project to go ahead.
