Lively laneways, a modern town square with safer pedestrian connections, open spaces, and community uses are part of an exciting draft master plan set to transform Epping Town Centre on public exhibition from Monday 21 July.
The Draft Epping Town Centre Master Plan includes creating a new Civic Place with open areas for relaxation and enhanced links to Boronia Park and potential options for new community uses.
Under the plans, Rawson Street will be transformed into a lively hub for food and retail, with better connections through a network of colourful laneways and a new bridge over Beecroft Road to improve pedestrian access from the station.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said Epping has outgrown the existing infrastructure and the community deserve a new thriving town centre.
“This master plan for Epping will help unlock the full potential of a tired western precinct and create modern social infrastructure for a rapidly growing community and boost jobs in the area once complete,” Cr Zaiter said.
“Epping is set to grow by about 31% in the next decade, this is about activating the urban hub, creating more business and job opportunities and making our facilities more accessible for families.
“Our draft master plan includes a range of exciting additions from colourful laneways, restaurants and shops to safer connections for pedestrians and plenty of green space to enjoy.”
The vision is driven by four key local places to bring the Epping Town Centre Master Plan to life:
- Epping Civic Place – the existing Rawson Street car park converted into a town square and open public space with a green link that extends to Boronia Park, while offering underground car parking to maximise the public domain and potential new library and community centre
- Rawson Street – a high street destination with cafés, restaurants and retail shops, prioritising pedestrian safety through widened footpaths, dedicated bike lanes, street tree planting and improving traffic conditions along Rawson Street
- Epping Laneway – a network of laneways connecting Beecroft Road to Boronia Park, brought to life through outdoor dining, public art and seating to be enjoyed in the day and at night
- Beecroft Road –a new pedestrian bridge that takes commuters directly to retail and commercial spaces from the train station, seamlessly connecting the east-west halves of Epping
Cr Zaiter said the community has been critical in shaping the vision, attending workshops, pop-up sessions and landholder meetings to share what matters most to them.
“We worked hard with our community to shape Epping’s new civic heart, with a vision that offers more dining, retail and open spaces, key transport connections and revamped public facilities,” Cr Zaiter said.
“This is a plan to revitalise Epping’s town centre that reflects the diverse community while making the area more accessible and it is important the community now have their say on the draft master plan.”
