Arthur Phillip Park features two sporting fields used by a variety of sporting clubs, schools and community groups, as well as a playground, fitness stations and picnic areas.

History

Arthur Phillip (1738–1814) was appointed Captain-General and Governor-in-Chief of the proposed colony of New South Wales in 1786. Tasked with establishing a British penal settlement, he led the First Fleet from England and arrived in Botany Bay in January 1788. Finding the area unsuitable, he moved the fleet north and established the colony at Sydney Cove. In 1791, seeking fertile land to support the growing settlement, Phillip founded the township of Parramatta, which became a vital agricultural and administrative centre in the early years of the colony.
