Each year up to 4 playgrounds are included in the annual playground replacement works program. Playgrounds are selected and identified from an annual playground safety audit we undertake on all our playground sites across the City. From this safety audit every playground is given a condition rating which determines its priority within our renewal program.

A portion of the reserve closest to the cliff face at Charles Herbert Reserve remains closed to the public. After years of exposure, this sandstone face has begun to destabilise and there is a risk of parts of this cliff face falling onto the reserve below. The fence serves to restrict access to the impact zone of any falling debris here in the interest of public safety.
Council engaged a Geotechnical Engineer who has provided advice and a scope of works to stabilise this cliff face. A proposed budget was also put forward for the 25-26 FY to deliver this work which has been approved. Once a firm timeframe is available, we will update the information on this page, however we anticipate works to be completed well within the 2025-26 FY (July 2025-June 2026) circumstances permitting.
Until these works are completed for your safety, please ensure you stay outside of the fenced area within the reserve.

The City of Parramatta is undertaking minor works at the base of Queen Avenue stairs on the northern side of the Parramatta River Foreshore. The work involves installing a concrete hardstand in the affected areas to prevent further erosion and to provide a safe work area for staff during flood cleanup on the connecting footbridge.
The Queens Avenue stairs and the area between the Queens Avenue stairs and Elizabeth St footbridge will be closed for the duration of the works. Please use the Elizabeth St or Stewart St stairs for access during this time. Signage will be provided at relevant access points to reflect this.
Update: By early July the fenced area will be reduced to only enclose concrete and turf areas so the public will have access to the footpaths and Queens Avenue stairs. The turf works will also be completed following this but will be subject to weather and turf establishment before all fences are removed.

Robin Thomas Reserve
Work at Robin Thomas Reserve is progressing well. Major upgrades to the sports field, including remediation, installation of irrigation system and turf, are complete.
Minor works including the replacement of the synthetic cricket wicket and soccer goal posts will be completed soon, along with site restoration.
Robin Thomas Reserve is planned to open in September/October 2025, once the turf has had time to establish and a quality sports field is ready to play on.
James Ruse Reserve
Stage 1 works at James Ruse Reserve, including installation of a new water tank (for sports field irrigation), installation of underground utilities including sewer, water, and electrical connections, are complete.
As part of Stage 2 works, Council is finalising plans for a permanent public toilet with change-room facility which will service the existing skate park, playground and water play park.
It is expected that construction of the proposed toilet and change-room facility will commence in late-2025 and be completed by mid-2026.
