Garbage Bin

Most City of Parramatta residents have access to a red lid garbage bin service.

Here’s some key facts about Council’s red lid garbage bin service:

  • These bins are collected weekly
  • Residents can choose from an 80, 140 or 240 litre bin - you can change your bin size here (costs will vary).
  • If you have received a green kitchen caddy from Council, that means you have a Food and Garden Organics (FOGO) service and therefore should put food waste in your green lid bin, not your red lid bin.
  •  Waste from your red lid bin goes straight to landfill, therefore we urge residents to reduce the waste they put into this bin (see below).

For a full list of what can, and can’t, go into all your bins see our A-Z Guide to Waste and Recycling or this downloadable guide(PDF, 2MB).

Please note that household batteries cannot be placed in any of your kerbside collection bins as they are a fire risk for collection vehicles. You can drop household batteries to one of our libraries, or book in a free problem waste collection.

How to further reduce waste to landfill

  • Say no to single-use plastic, such as plastic bags, straws and disposable coffee cups
  • If you’re still putting food waste into your red bin, reduce food waste via meal planning and better food storage.
  • Compost your organic waste
  • Recycle correctly
  • Choose items with recyclable packaging
  • Repair broken items
  • Donate your unwanted items to local donation centres.
  • Buy second-hand goods
