Charles Street Square Public Art

A planned feature of Charles Street Square is a public art piece which engages audiences and takes them on a journey, exploring Parramatta over time. Craig Walsh’s new video projection artwork is expected to open to the public mid-2024.

This public art project acknowledges the continuing presence of First Nations people in Parramatta and our shared journey towards reconciliation, respect, and reciprocity. Craig consulted with community, heritage, archaeological and ecological teams, and Dharug Cultural Custodians to create a story of human interaction with the land and waters over time.  The work presents a deep time experience that captures past and present.

The work seeks to transform a public space into a large-scale projection montage responsive to the site, and explores the diverse influences which collectively contribute to our understanding of this unique place.

The artwork featuring the stories of Parramatta will be projected 30 meters long x 10 meters high onto the escarpment across the river from Parramatta Quay and will be best viewed from Charles Street Square. Projections will begin at 6pm in winter and 8pm in summer. Admission will be free.
