Where will the Parramatta Light Rail Tree Planting and Neighbourhood Improvement program start?

Starting in mid-March 2019, a pilot planting project will see more than 100 new trees planted in Westmead and North Parramatta. The pilot is planned to launch a broader planting program, which will also include increased landscaping and bushcare works.

The four-year Parramatta Light Rail Tree Planting and Neighbourhood Improvement program is expected to see more than 2,500 trees planted in streets, parks and reserves throughout the City of Parramatta.

Council is working with Transport for NSW to identify locations where the offset tree planting program will be able to best deliver the greatest benefit to the community.

For phase 1, a total of 79 trees will green nature strips in Barney Street, By Street, Dunlop Street and Harold Street in North Parramatta, and 41 trees will be planted in Jessie Street, Caroline Street and Queens Road, Westmead.

Urban heat mapping undertaken by the City of Parramatta showed these streets were some of the hottest in the Local Government Area. Additional tree planting in these areas will provide more shade; help reduce urban heat, particularly in summer; create more attractive neighbourhoods and improve air quality.
