2026 Street Tree Planting Program

New tree planted on the street curb

Early-May to late-June 2026

Trees play an important role in our City. The benefits of trees are well established. We know that greener streets and parks mean a cooler city, a cleaner environment, and a happier and healthier community.

The 2026 tree planting program responds to residents’ requests for Council-funded trees outside their homes.

Additional trees are being planted in areas where environmental maps show streets are affected by urban heat. Council staff have determined these areas will benefit from additional tree canopy.

From early-May to late-June* more than 800 trees will be planted in Beecroft, Carlingford, Dundas Valley, Epping, Ermington, Northmead, Telopea, Toongabbie, and Winston Hills. (See the table below for streets and tree types).

Our new trees will help create shade, reduce pollution, provide cleaner air and help transform our City with beautiful green corridors for everyone to enjoy.

*Planting schedule subject to site conditions and weather.

Tree types

New trees will help reduce urban heat, as well as create more attractive neighbourhoods in Parramatta, now and for future generations.

Where residents’ requests for a particular tree species could not be accommodated, our arborists selected trees suitable for each location.

There are 14 tree types planned for neighbourhood streets. You and your neighbours will be provided with high-quality, semi-mature trees valued at $150 each. Most trees have been grown by Council’s staff in City of Parramatta’s nursery.

While the trees are primarily native, there are some exotic species included, both deciduous and evergreen.

Among the selected tree types are species that are slim and tall, ideal for narrow streets, and those that are more compact, perfect for under powerlines. Planting locations consider maintaining access and clearance from underground utilities as well as other safety factors.

Support for our 2026 trees

Newly-planted trees are vulnerable, and while the trees will be cared for by Council over the next 12-months, with community support their chances for survival are much higher.

You don’t have to do anything other than let us know if your tree needs extra care. However, if you want to play more of a role in greening your street, you could become a Tree Champion.

Tree Champions visit their tree(s) once a week or so to make sure they are doing OK, and let us know if something isn’t right. A quick email to our team is all it takes 2026treeplanting@cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au

Please note, due to the high number of applicants, we are pausing recruitment for the 2026 Tree Champions program.

Tree Champions will be contacted in July/August. Tree allocations will be confirmed.

Do I have to do anything?

A variety of robust tree species have been selected by a qualified arborist. Root structure, underground utilities, overhead power-lines, driveway access, streetscape heritage, and existing trees were considered.

Council will water and care for your new trees for the next 12-months to ensure they reach their full potential.

You don’t have to do anything - all we ask is that you let us know if your street tree needs more attention. Email us at 2026treeplanting@cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au

Can I get involved in looking after our street trees?

Yes. As in previous years, we’ll be looking for Tree Champions to monitor the 2026 trees and help them reach their full potential. Tree Champions regularly visit their trees, monitor their health and report any issues.

At the end of the year, Tree Champions who provide a short report on the health of their trees (a sentence about each) will receive a $50 e-gift card as a token of thanks for helping our new trees.

Please note, due to the high number of applicants, we are pausing recruitment for the 2026 Tree Champions program.

Tree Champions will be contacted in July/August. Tree allocations will be confirmed.
