Street Tree Planting Program FAQs

The 14 tree types that were selected for the 2026 Tree Planting program were either requested by residents, and verified by Council’s team as appropriate for the proposed location, or chosen by City of Parramatta’s tree team.

Many trees were grown by Council’s staff at City of Parramatta’s nursery.

The 800+ new trees will help provide shade and cool the street on hot summer days, as well as create more attractive neighbourhoods.

City of Parramatta considers its urban heat mapping data to prioritise where trees should be planted and reviews site conditions to assess the most appropriate tree types for each proposed planting location.

Constraints such as underground utilities, overhead power lines, driveway locations, nature strip widths, and sightlines for roads and footpaths are assessed to make sure tree species are suitable for the selected location.  

Tree species were selected by an arborist with consideration given to various conditions in each street to ensure the most suitable trees are planted. Where residents made specific requests for a tree type, the species was reviewed for suitability in the proposed location. Where possible, the requested tree was provided. Sometimes, the selected tree was not appropriate for the location or unavailable. Please see the suburb and tree type table above for 2026 plantings. 

From early-May to late-June, around 800 semi-advanced high-quality trees with a height between 2.0 and 3.5m will be planted along the nature strips in suburbs including Beecroft, Carlingford, Dundas Valley, Epping, Ermington, Northmead, Telopea, Toongabbie, and Winston Hills.

Tree planting, including site preparation, will typically occur between 7am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. 

Site preparations and planting will be undertaken in stages. Trees and supplies for each stage of planting will be delivered daily, with only minimal equipment on your street each day.

It is expected that the tree planting program on each street will be completed within approximately two days (subject to site conditions and weather).

Planting is being undertaken by hand, disruption will be minimal. However, traffic controllers will be in place as required to ensure pedestrians and motorists are guided appropriately during any delivery times.

However, there will be no requirements to section off on-street parking to accommodate large trucks. 

The trees being planted are in 20cm to 45cm pots. Only hand tools, shovels and augers, will be used throughout the project.

No. To help the trees become established Council will commence an intensive watering and maintenance program and will continue to care for the trees for 12-months.

In some instances, trees requested by residents were not suitable for the proposed location. Sometimes the selected tree type was not available. You can speak with our tree team about potential options.

Planning massive planting takes a lot of time and preparation. Tree requests for 2026 opened in February 2025 and closed at the end of February 2026. However, you can submit a tree request here and should other programs become funded, you will be contacted.
