George Kendall Riverside Park temporary closure

Temporary partial closure George Kendall Riverside Park and leash-free dog area

Monday 16 November to Friday 27 November 2020

City of Parramatta has appointed specialist consultants to undertake investigations in George Kendall Riverside Park, Ermington. Soil testing and gas monitoring will require partial closure of the park from Monday 16 to Friday 27 November to allow a safe zone for work to be created.

What’s happening?

Prior to its transformation into a reserve in 1979, the area was a landfill site and Council has maintained an annual environmental monitoring program at this site including testing for methane and other gas emissions from the breakdown of the landfill which exists beneath the grassed surface of the park.

Work at George Kendall Riverside Park will start on Monday 16 November 2020 and is expected to take two weeks to complete (subject to site conditions and weather). Sections of the reserve including the leash-free dog area will be closed until testing is completed.

What safety measures will be in place?

In accordance with SafeWork NSW requirements, air-quality monitoring will be carried out during all excavation works.  To ensure public health and environmental protection, workers will employ all appropriate safety precautions while on site. Workers will also be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment including masks, gloves and hazmat suits.

Parts of the park will be closed, (refer to map) signage will be installed and park users will be directed to use other areas of the park and nearby leash-free dog areas. Work areas will be reopened to the public as work in each section is completed.

What happens next?

The planned soil testing and gas monitoring will allow Council to progress with a remediation action plan for the George Kendall Riverside Reserve and the neighbouring leash-free dog park.

It is expected that following the investigations, Council will work with specialists to design and install a new capping layer to ensure any possible contaminants within the landfill remain safely contained.

Test results and information on the next stage of work will be provided on this page.
