Sir Thomas Mitchell Reserve

Soil and groundwater investigation at Sir Thomas Mitchell Reserve Monday 10 to Monday 17 March 2025

City of Parramatta has an ongoing program to gather information about former landfill sites which have since become parks and reserves. These studies can inform the design of future park upgrades or improvements.

A portion of Sir Thomas Mitchell Reserve was used for the disposal of garbage in the 1960s.  The landfill area was subsequently capped and converted to a sporting field in the 1970s.

In early-March soil and groundwater investigations at Sir Thomas Mitchell Reserve will begin.

Soil and groundwater testing is focussed on the sporting field. No intrusive work will be undertaken in other sections of the reserve.

Work at Sir Thomas Mitchell Reserve, Dundas

City of Parramatta will soon begin work on Thomas Mitchell Reserve, Dundas.  This work will involve the sampling and analysis of soil and groundwater across the playing field.

Council has engaged appropriately qualified contractors to carry out this investigative work.
Drilling equipment and other machinery can be expected to be in use on site.

As part of their work, contractors will use machinery to create 10 x bore holes and
11 test pits approximately 1m2. to allow for sampling.

Soil samples will be taken to a specialist laboratory with results expected in approximately two (2) weeks.

On completion of the works, the site will be restored to its proper condition.

Soil and groundwater testing is focussed on the sporting field. No intrusive work will be undertaken in other sections of the reserve.

Environment and safety precautions

During this work, appropriate safety controls will be in place, including barricades around the work areas to create an exclusion zone, surface gas-monitors and background fibre air-monitors.

Personal protective equipment, potentially including full face masks and coveralls, will be in use by workers in accordance with Work Health and Safety requirements.

When will work take place?

Drilling equipment and other machinery can be expected on site from 7.00am to 5.00pm.

Works will be scheduled to ensure that there is no disruption to the use of the sporting field and that impacts on other areas of the reserve are minimised.

Works are expected to be completed within one (1) week, subject to site conditions and weather.
