Recycled Road Trial

Paving the way for a Sustainable Future

Council is trialling an innovative new asphalt product to support local recycling and to find new uses for recycled materials.

Produced by Downer, the Reconophalt road pavement includes recycled content from:

  • Glass (to replace sand)
  • Waste toner cartridges (from the national Planet Ark recycling initiative)
  • Recycled asphalt (from old roads)

For every 1km of a two-lane road laid using Reconophalt the equivalent of approximately 500,000 plastic bags, 165,000 glass bottles, and 12,500 toner cartridges are diverted from landfill (Source: Downer).

In addition to its sustainability credentials, the trial is also monitoring road pavement durability, with the Reconophalt reported to be more durable, resistant to cracking and longer-lasting than regular asphalt.

The two trial sites - Chelmsford Avenue in Epping and Honor Street in Ermington, will be monitored by Council’s road engineers to ensure the product is performing as expected.

This project has been partially funded through the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment’s ‘Waste Less, Recycle More’ initiative, which has been funded by the waste levy.
