Statement regarding Parramatta Mission site

City of Parramatta Council would like to assure the community that it has no intention of shutting down the services of the Parramatta Mission or preventing them from building on their site as some media reports have suggested.

Council recognises the valuable role that Parramatta Mission plays in our community and wants to assure all those who use and rely on the Mission’s services that it is committed to working with the Mission so it can continue providing support to the community before, during and after the development of the Civic Link.

As convenor of the Parramatta Regional Homelessness Interagency, Council recognises the increasing numbers of people experiencing homelessness throughout Sydney and remains committed to working with many Government and non-Government agencies, including Parramatta Mission, to help support vulnerable members of our community.

The draft Civic Link Development Control Plan (DCP), which will guide the redevelopment of the sites along the Civic Link (a major new pedestrian boulevard and series of green public spaces in the heart of the Parramatta CBD, connecting Parramatta Square to the River foreshore), is currently on exhibition, providing an opportunity for landowners and the community to have their say.

The DCP will only come into effect if the landowner, including Parramatta Mission, chooses to redevelop their site.

Council officers have been in ongoing discussion with Parramatta Mission regarding outcomes for their site. Council recently held a workshop with all interested landowners and major stakeholders for the Civic Link DCP, including the Parramatta Mission, to discuss options, as well as address concerns and answer questions. Council looks forward to further conversations with the Mission and community about the draft DCP.
