Parramatta Light Rail

2023 Telopea Light Rail Tree Planting

Parramatta Light Rail Telopea Planting August 2023

In August, City of Parramatta will begin planting native tubestock in Telopea with more than 370 endemic trees being planted in the Vineyard Creek bushland corridor at Rockfarm Avenue and Robert Street.

Endemic trees unique to the Costal Enriched Sandstone Moist Forest including Sydney Red Gum, Sydney Peppermint and Yellow Pittosporum are being planted. Approximately 50cm tall, the trees will be cared for under a 24-month maintenance program to ensure they have the best chance of growing to maturity.

Why plant local natives?

Planting endemic native tree/plant species means these plants are sourced locally. This is achieved through seed collection/propagation within our Local Government Area (LGA).

City of Parramatta sources local plants from within the LGA to encourage the continuity of specific plant communities. Often these plant communities are associated with specific soil profiles and conditions. These communities also support a wide range of wildlife species.

Local plant communities also provide environmental services such as:

  • Producing clean air
  • Stabilising soil preventing erosion
  • Tree and plant roots in stable soil aid in filtering water
  • Provide pubic amenity
  • Provide habitat for wildlife
  • Reducing Urban Heat Island Effects
  • Mitigate variations in weather i.e. global warming.
