HMAS Parramatta II

In the very early hours of 27 November 1941, HMAS Parramatta II, whilst on convoy duty in the Mediterranean Sea off Tobruk, was struck by a torpedo from German submarine U-559. The torpedo struck Parramatta’s magazine causing a massive explosion. The ship rolled to starboard and sank quickly. All the officers and most of the crew were killed. One hundred and thirty-eight lives were lost; 24 survived.

To commemorate the loss of the ship and to remember and honour all those who served, a Memorial Service is held annually on the Sunday prior to 27 November at the HMAS Parramatta Memorial, located in Queens Wharf Reserve, George Street, Parramatta.

When: Sunday, 23 November 2025

Where: HMAS Parramatta Memorial, Queens Wharf Reserve, Parramatta

The service pays tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the men aboard HMAS Parramatta II.

In 2025 City of Parramatta will again join Naval Association of Australia Parramatta Memorial Sub-Section in commemorating the 84th anniversary of this loss.
