James Hardie Legacy Sites

Ruse Street Reserve - Harris Park

Geotechnical works December 2019

City of Parramatta has commissioned environmental specialists to carry out survey work and geotechnical investigations in Ruse Street Reserve, Harris Park.

Earlier James Hardie Legacy site investigations found evidence of asbestos contamination. The City of Parramatta had previously undertaken remediation works including capping of the open space area and the installation of fencing to prevent public access to the embankment.

While these works ensured the reserve remained safe, Council is now developing a plan for the permanent treatment of the currently-fenced embankment areas.

How and where works will take place

The embankment investigation works proposed for Ruse Street Reserve are scheduled to begin during the week commencing 16 December 2019 with completion anticipated by the end of January 2020.

Signage will be installed on-site and neighbouring residents have been advised.

Investigation will be undertaken in accordance with current environment, health and safety standards and guidelines by a licensed contractor.

All measures will be undertaken to ensure public safety during the works including asbestos air fibre monitoring.

Geotechnical investigations will involve a drill machine constructing boreholes in the northern embankment to test soils below the surface and inform the design of the proposed capping layer.

In accordance with WHS requirements, staff involved in the testing will wear appropriate personal protective equipment. This may include coveralls, masks, and gloves.

Once testing is complete, each area will be reinstated to its original condition and certified as safe.

City of Parramatta expects to receive the final report on the results of the testing in March 2020. This will form part of a larger report informing the civil design of the treatment for this site.
