Parramatta Aquatic Centre (PAC) was designed by Andrew Burges Architects, Grimshaw Architects and McGregor Coxall Landscape Architects. The consortium was selected from a shortlist of four outstanding entries through an international Design Excellence Competition.
The award-winning design carefully integrates the centre into the surrounding landscape of Parramatta Park. It creates a modern aquatic and leisure facility while respecting the heritage, topography and unique character of the Mays Hill Precinct.
To minimise its impact on the park, much of the building is embedded within the natural landscape. This reduces the visible footprint of the centre and ensures it sits comfortably within its surroundings. The design also preserves and improves pedestrian pathways and connections throughout the park.
Parramatta Park was a key consideration throughout the design process. The centre has been planned to complement the park's natural setting and enhance visitors' experience of the area.
The facility is arranged on a single level, making it easy to navigate and accessible for all visitors. At its heart is a circular outdoor pool, which acts as the centrepiece of the design and connects the various aquatic and leisure spaces.
The ring-shaped layout creates clear sightlines and intuitive movement throughout the facility. Spaces have been positioned to maximise functionality, natural sunlight, shade and views across Parramatta Park and the city skyline.
The main entry is conveniently connected to pedestrian routes and parking areas. Visitors are welcomed by a vibrant community hub that includes a café, foyer and retail offerings, creating a place for recreation, relaxation and social connection.
PAC secured the highest honour at the NSW Architecture Awards in 2024.
PAC was recognised in the International Architecture Awards for excellence in design.
